I am not going to tell you which is the stronger, Lisa, until you tell me where this is. Sometimes you photogs are more secretive than fly- fishermen who have their special streams and won't even divulge which state it is in. :o) #10817750

Both are good shots Lisa, but I feel the second image is the stronger of the two. Mainly because of the strong foreground that leads the eye into the picture. That coupled with the showing of two waterfalls instead of one. The other is more "traditional" and therefore more common.

I do find both to be a bit contrast strong and suggest opening up the shadows and reducing the highlights. The highlights/shadow tool in PSE and CS work well for this. #10817976

I agree with Dale’s assessment 100% including the reasons and the suggestion. Nice shots!

I hope they get those fires out soon as it is hard to breathe in Reno tonight. On the news tonight they said only 2% contained as of today so it is not looking good right now. Closest fire is 20 miles from the Yosemite Valley.

I drove to Tahoe today. Smoke was so thick you couldn't see the tops of the mountains, and you couldn't see across the lake. Sunset was very nice, though. #10818751

OK Lisa, now that you have told me where these shots were taken I must keep to my side of the bargain.
Once again I am seeing the world slightly differently than Dale. Yes, the first image is more "traditional" but we would never shoot a sunset again if we thought it was too common! The cascade of water gives a strong sense of the power of water tumbling down a mountainside. For sure it is no Niagara but I can hear it and perhaps even catch a whiff of the cool dampness of the air on a hot summer's day here.
So Lisa, it is definitely the first image for me.
With the second image, I am again disagreeing with our friend Mr D. Including that large outcrop of rock for me does the exact opposite of leading my eye into the picture. It reduces the waterfall to a somewhat insignificant little stream (that's me somewhat exaggerating) and my eyes are held too long by that large chunk of granite.

Hi Lisa-in the first photo, I want to see more mountains towards the top. In the second photo-there they are! So, the second photo is my favorite. I love the rocky foreground leading into the falls and trees, then the mountains. I do like how the falls are off to the side. Love the composition on this one-maybe because it is a little different. #10819455

I like both, but the first one better. The big rock in the foreground of the second draws me away fro the falls.

I tend to like waterfall shots with the aperture stopped down so that the water looks like it is flowing.

I like the second one the best, I think I like seeing all the mountains in the background. I agree with Dale that the highlights could come down some.

Thanks everyone!
I did use a polarizer, Beth...well, it was on my lens, but I forget to move it around. I agree the highlights can come down a little, and also agree that while the first one is pretty it's pretty conventional looking, but the rock in the second can distract from the waterfall. Back to the drawing board! #10824345
