This plant is native to many parts of Southeast Asia. Locally, it is called Nobotan (のぼたん) and in the scientific community, Melastoma candidum, would be the correct terminology. There are many medicinal uses for this plant in Asia. But, I've heard, it has become a pest in places like Hawaii and Australia.
