Thank you for your comments, Donna! My years of doing photography have really honed my skills, technical and visual, but you know, so much of it is just getting out there to experience nature, and often you just luck out. My group was half-sick, half afraid they were going to get sick, on a tour I did in Yellowstone one winter. So my partner and I were the only ones that showed up in the lobby that morning, 26 degrees below zero - dressed up like Michelin men! We headed out to see what we'd see, and man-oh-man, did we have a great time! I made at least 6 pictures that morning that were favorites. And to think we could have slept in that morning since noone was showing up! Glad we didn't... #3609577Kathryn Wesserling December 07, 2006
I ran into the most incredible hoar-frost scenery in Upstate NY, a couple of winters ago. Unfortunately, my gear and experience didn't capture it as well as yours did. Now, my gear is slightly better - Canon S2. What kind of settings would be appropriate if the same scene presents itself? Thanks Melissa for your enthusiastic response! - and Kathy - I missed your comments back in December - sorry. I'm not sure of the settings for your camera, but I do know that I had to overexposed my snow scenes very often to get the snow to be white - otherwise the camera meter reads the brightness and tries to make that middle tone - resulting in gray snow! So it sounds like your semi-manual setting would be best and a compensation of the reading to get a good histogram exposure.
