Thanks, Debbie! I've been playing with these this weekend. My ultimate goal is to get collisions, but I'm afraid I'm limited by technology on this. I need a gadget that controls the rate of the drops. Someday.

As for this shot, the light is provided by three speedlights, set to 1/32 power. Two of them are pointed at a white backdrop, bouncing light back to the glass. Both of these are gelled with yellow gels. The third is set forward enough that a bit of light spills on the front of the drop, but most hits the backdrop. This one is gelled red. The water is colored green and is a mix of about 1 part glycerin and 2 parts cold water (not an exact measure). Water is dropped from a gadget I built that uses an electronically controlled valve. Timing is pure luck, a matter of gauging the timing of pushing the water button and the shutter release. I toss a lot more images than I keep. My keep rate is only about 20% and then only a fraction of those will get worked on. Focusing and DOF can be a challenge, but it's not impossible.

If we have time, we can mess with this when y'all are out here in June.

Both are great - I prefer the second post with the blue gel probably because I just like the color better but I think it is also easier to tell what is going on in the shot. Love to play when we come visit. Speaking of which when do we need to book the hotel? #10645971

I'm with Mike on preferring the second shot. Jeff, have you tried a medical IV drip? Once you get a consistent rate, perhaps you could then use your time lapse timer to dial in the matching rate. Of course, having a device with an analog adjustable timer would be the ideal. #10646062

Dale - one of the challenges of using a continuous drip is that you don't get the opportunity to let the water settle between shots. You can use a cup to catch the drops if needed. Also, as the volume of water in the IV bag diminishes, the consistency of the drops.

Jeff these are really awesome. Have you tried IV tubing with the roller clamp to regulate your drips? I tried that the time I attempted this but wasn't using the lights or glycerin. #10646292

Beth - I have used an IV setup. It works, but has some challenges.

Ultimately, I'd like to get set up with a gadget called "Camera Axe". It's a great gadget that allows you to do a bunch of really tricky stuff. In the case of water drops, it uses a set of optical sensors to drop the water and time the second drops. #10647043
