Champagne Pool - Natures Thermal Wonderland

Uploaded: November 23, 2012

Description

Champagne Pool is a prominent geothermal feature within the Wai-O-Tapu geothermal area in the Bay of Plenty Region of the North Island of New Zealand. The name Champagne Pool is derived from the abundant efflux of carbon dioxide (CO2), similar to a glass of bubbling champagne.

The hot spring was formed 900 years ago by a hydrothermal eruption, which makes it in geological terms a relatively young system. Its crater is around 65 m (213 ft) in diameter with a maximum depth of approximately 62 m (203 ft) and is filled with an estimated volume of 50,000 m3 (1,800,000 cu ft) of geothermal fluid.

The deep geothermal water below Champagne Pool is of the order of 260 °C (500 °F)[3] but water temperature within the pool is maintained
at 73 °C (163 °F) to 75 °C (167 °F) by losing heat to the atmosphere.

My goodness this is beautiful, Kim, with the grays meeting the orange meeting the greenish color of the water and the vapor hovering over all. Unusual scene and I like it a lot. #10430095

Excellent composition, Kim. The colorful leading line works quite nicely. Also, thanks for the geology lesson. All kidding aside, it added to the interest in the photo. #10430493

Thank you Arthur, Nikki and Gary and Gary I thought sometimes photos need to be explained......I also should have mentioned that it really stunk of rotten eggs and I could hardly breath with so many vapours as the wind kept blowing the vapours high and wide and I had to sit there and wait for a gap in the vapours, such an interesting place though I must say.....Also if you have seen the pic in my gallery called "Artist Palette" that is the full view of this pool.
