Michelle, I've stared at those big black eyes off-and-on over the years, and I think that's what creates the illusion of eye-to-eye contact and some sort of expression.
Thanks to Bobby, I've verified this IS a wolf spider, and supposedly, these things have 8 (eight!) eyes. Their size varies. This one's body was at least an inch long. Luckily, I spied it at work, in a conference room, and not at home, where many of these turn up! #10242461

Looking back, I'm amazed that when I spotted it slowly making its way across the carpet, I grabbed my camera, knelt down, and shot from less than a foot away!!
