Description

This is my friend, Mitch, owner of Sun Dolphin Surfboards, putting the finishing touches on a surfboard for one of his clients in Japan. I took a lot of shots, with flash and without, different ISOs and shutter speeds, basically experimenting with light as I don’t shoot indoors much. About halfway through the session, Mitch informed me that this board was the last one that he and Terry Martin had collaborated upon. Terry Martin, who succumbed to cancer earlier this year, was possibly the most prolific (shaping an estimated 80,000 surfboards during his 5 decade career) and definitely one of the most talented shapers ever. Mitch is one of the many young surfboard shapers whom Terry had taken under his expert tutelage. Anyways, it was quite an honor to not only photograph Mitch who is a very talented and future master shaper himself, but also to photograph one of last boards that Terry Martin ever touched…

Exif: F Number: 3.2, Exposure Bias Value: -2.00, ExposureTime: 1/125 seconds, Flash: did not fire, compulsory flash mode, ISO: 200, White balance: Auto white balance, FocalLength: 24.00 mm, Model: Canon EOS 5D

I remember hearing Terry Martin's name in Hawaii many years ago. His reputation is widespread. Wonderful story Robert and a great capture. #10225174

The shaping room lighting worked out great. The slow shutter speed is nice with the sanding motion. Terry was an artist and a huge influence to many. I was blessed to have worked a little with Eaton and Frye while in S.D. in the 70's. Cool shot. #10225982
