John Oliver Cabin- Cades Cove, TN

Uploaded: June 28, 2012 00:13:20

Description

First building as you go around the Cades Cove Loop. One of the oldest log homes in the park, the Oliver place remained in the family until the park was established. Architecturally, it reflects the techniques and skills of European immigrants and represents a style typically found on the eastern frontier in the mid-1850s. The cabin contains no pegs or nails because gravity locks them together. The open spaces between the logs (chinks) were filled with mud to seal out the rain and wind. The small windows and doors conserved heat and maintained the building's strength.

Beautiful reminder of my last home state. (I just moved from Knoxville- about 32 miles from Cades Cove and am now clear across the country in Montana.) #10205054

Thank you all for your kind comments and support! Carol, funny you lived in Knoxville! Where abouts did you live? My son was born at the Baptist hospital in Knoxville. We lived on the outskirts (New Market) near Jefferson City so we were really close to the Smokies. Left there in late '98. My best friend still lives in Knoxville so we always visit her while visiting my parents in AL.

Chris, that is the perfect size house for cleaning! Shouldn't take too long! Seeing all the old cabins makes me think how tough it had to be to live back in those days. No electricity, no cars, no plumbing. Its hard to believe how far we have come since those days! #10205362
