Nikki - The grainy look is actually the surface texture of the iPod. I believe the Shuffles currently being produced have a smooth, glossy, color finish; this is an older one, when they only came in "satin" aluminum finish. But this close up, the details of that satin finish are interesting, for sure! #10174726
