Calm

Uploaded: May 14, 2012

Description

The fourth in my series capturing the 8 carved heads on the cathedral's badly damaged south portal pinnacle. Of the 8, only 2 do not show
visible damage in the photos. However, just out of frame below those 2, the stone is cracked and broken. Compared to the first 3 in the series,
this fellow seems calm and contented, having survived the earthquake within a small zone of undamaged masonry.

Don't know whether I like the expressions or the textures better - but I sure do love these heads, Chris :) #10136463

B&W is very appropriate for this shot. Brings out the texture of the stone. Nicely captured Chris. How's the restoration comming? #10136696

Thank you all very much!
Nikki; the 50 or so years of exposure to the elements has created a marvelous texture on the limestone, to be sure!
Dave; restoration has yet to really begin in earnest. The last 8 months have been focused on stabilization---pulling down tons of damaged limestone, building scaffolding to the worst areas in order to wrap steel cables around the loose stones until they can be dismantled, etc. Some repair carving is underway already on the ground, but more dismantling is still underway.
The cathedral needs to buy a tower crane (which will mount directly on the rooftop of the central bell tower) to be used for the next 5-7 years of work; but those tend to run about $2M, and that money has not been raised yet. #10137778
