Old Lahaina Fort Maui HI

Uploaded: March 20, 2012

Description

These are reconstructed walls of coral blocks and sand to mark the corners of the old fort that dominated roads and Lahaina town about 1832.
The fort was rebuilt after English whaler John Palmer fired on mission premises in 1827. The blocks were cut from the coral reef about 40 yards offshore.
It was once the custom for a Hawaiian sentinel to appear on the walls at dusk and beat a drum furiously to signal all seamen ashore to return to their ships. The old fort was demolished in 1854.
