Meshed With Steel

Uploaded: March 05, 2012

Description

EOD
Maui is a volcanic island and there are hazards caused by the volcanic cliffs like falling rocks from erosion and earthquakes. To combat this problem, Maui County has put up chain link mesh along certain cliff faces to contain falling rock.
This chain link is comprised of an outer layer of regular chain link and an inner layer of larger interlocked steel circles that help contain volcanic rocks when they crumble and fall. Larger rocks can break through the steel mesh.

I thought, from the thumbnail, that you were photographing bed springs! And then remembered that I had seen similar mesh around the cliffs at Malibu, California! #10024568

Nice capture Heather. I remember seeing this when I was in Hawaii last year on several of the islands, when you ride along some of the roads and see the cliffs up close you just pray that it will hold the rocks back. #10026034
