Description

Two sandhill cranes showed up in my backyard yesterday. I was on my way to walk the dog when I saw them (the dog was unsure about these 2 big birds!) I quickly took him inside and grabbed the camera. I went back out and took some photos then walked right by them and filled up the birdbath with fresh water. Also, I gave them a bit of bread to keep them around (of which they ate a little)This is one after drinking from the birdbath. This one was smaller (maybe the female?) and had a crooked beak.

Thank you all so much for your kind comments! I haven't seen my backyard visitors again, but they are always nearby. Generally they fly over the house in the mornings and evenings and I am going to try and capture them in flight. I can usually hear them coming before I see them because of the sound they make. I was coming from the store on St Patrick's Day with my windows down and sunroof open and saw 3 flying against the most beautiful sunset-colored sky. I just didn't have my camera with me! I sure wish I had! #10046515

Beautiful image, Carol! What great detail! I love these huge birds. Every year I go to Bosque del Apache several times to watch and hear them! I've never gotten such a wonderful close-up! What a beautifully strange beak, too! #10047018
