Rango (A Bornean Orangutan)
Description: Endangered due to habitat destruction and the pet trade.

Wt: Male: 165-220 lbs.
The male sometimes produces a characteristic long call. This is a series of loud roars followed by bubbling groans and may be accompanied by the throwing of branches. This call helps the male be aware of where other males are located and attracts receptive females. Fibrous tissue called flanges surround the male's face and a large throat sac enhances the long call. They develop the cheek pads, pronounced throat pouches, long fur and long-calls once they gain a home range, which occurs when they are between 15 and 20 years old.

I didn't catch the age of this orangutan, but overheard a zoo worker saying he was the oldest (or one of the oldest) orangutans in captivity. She was amazed to find him on the platform posing for photos, saying she had never seen him up there before. It was $5 zoo day (held several times a year) so it was very crowded and she assumed he was excited over the crowd
