Description

----
When I came upon these two clams, I dropped to my knees to take a closer look.
---
And I began to wonder: "Where to baby clams COME FROM?"
-----
I suppose I should have researched this before posting, but I wanted to bring you in on this question first. Does anyone know?
----------
Another shot from our visit to Island Beach State Park NJ last Wednesday.

Beautiful tones Michelle!

So I just went to Google, and the story of clams may be more complex...here's an excerpt:

Hard clams begin their adult lives as males, often become females with greater maturity, and require individuals of both sexes for reproduction.

Who would have thought the story starts like this... #9969346

Marilyn Cornwell February 07, 2012

Jeff must know this - the adult beverage seems appropriate. #9969349

I had no idea so I googled it too. Here's what somebody said:
Clams don't pick a mate and there are no rituals. Clams do what is called broadcast spawning; when water temps warm, males and females broadcast their sperm, eggs and reproductive cells into the water. A softshell clam can live 10-20 years, spawning two times a year and producing 100,000 to 1 million eggs at a time. Eggs and sperm are able to travel for miles, after fertilization occurs a larval (clam) is born.
So there ya go. Who would have thought?
Anyway, this is a fantastic shot of the happy couple! #9970725

It's (almost) a toss-up - what's better? Your excellent, detailed b/w shot of "spooning" clams or the ensuing discussion of how baby clams come to be....close call, very, but your capture wins! Enjoyed the heck out of this one, Michelle! Thanks for the view, the thought-provoking commentary and the great reading material following same! :) :) #9971320
