I took many shots of this egret first without metering off mid gray or mid tones (moving fast, being lazy...). All were overexposing his feathers. Then, I tried the blue sky (too light blue), the brown of the salt marsh roots (not quite mid-tone enough), and finally spot metered off the green background and underexposed by 2/3; tripod. This was the ticket to expose the bird correctly!
