Knot on the Beach

Description

The waves are getting bigger, as the winter season draws near. Big knots of kelp, like the one in the foreground of this photo, are starting to wash up. Rich in iodine, kelp is sold as an herbal supplement and is quite inexpensive (use with caution), so I leave the kelp on the beach.

"I knew, of course, that trees and plants had roots, stems, bark, branches and foliage that reached up toward the light. But I was coming to realize that the real magician was light itself." ~ Edward Steichen (1879 – 1973. American Photographer)

Nikon D700, 20 mm f/2.8D Lens. f/4.5, 1/80 second exposure. ISO 400 (9/29/2011, 7:05 AM. Battle Rock, Port Orford, Oregon, USA.)

Another so apt quotation. This is a spooky shot...the kelp is so like a pile of slithering snakes...but the light is truly magnificent. #9711993
