Life on the Rock

Uploaded: September 16, 2011 20:16:30

Description

This rock, situated in the inter-tidal zone near Battle Rock, is covered with life. The blue color is from California mussels, which were an important food source for Native Americans and are still considered a delicacy by many. The orange is from the ochre sea stars, which are probably feeding on the mussels. And there are also some giant green anemones visible on the right side of the rock and there are barnacles everywhere. Heck, there’s more life here on this one rock than in all of Port Orford on the 4th of July!

Nikon D700, 20 mm f/2.8D Nikkor Lens. f/5.0, 1/100 second exposure. ISO 200 (9/14/2011, 7:35 AM. Battle Rock Beach, Port Orford, Oregon, USA.)
