Cathedral
Uploaded: August 24, 2011
The Cathedral Church of St. Peter and St. Paul (aka Washington National Cathedral).
As you may have heard, the Virginia earthquake on Aug. 23 caused extensive masonry damage to this landmark building. Several pinnacles have been
broken, mis-aligned, or have collapsed. One or two flying buttresses have developed cracks, along with some wall areas, and falling
masonry actually punched a hole through the metal-clad roof. Damages are still being evaluated, and the building (where I've served
as a volunteer guide for 16 years) remains closed at this time. If you have the means to, please consider making a donation of any size
to the repair efforts, which will be very expensive; the cathedral was built over 83 years entirely without taxpayer or federal funding,
and still operates that way today, reliant on gifts and donations. More details on the damage, closures, repairs, and a link to donate
may be found at their site, nationalcathedral dot org.

A sad story I had not yet heard. What a gorgeous capture you have chosen for your beautifully worded plea, Chris. Does the cathedral remain open during this period? #1403372R. J. Laudenbacher August 24, 2011
This is a fabulous shot Chris but sooooooo sad to hear of the damage to this magnificent building. I like Michelle had not heard this yet and this is a great way to get the word spread. #9624299Chris Budny August 24, 2011

So sad and so sorry to hear that! Wouldn't they have insurance to help with something like this? I don't know just curious! So sorry to hear this!Datha Y. Thompson August 24, 2011

So sorry to hear of the damage to this extraordinary and beautiful structure, Chris. #9624976Terry Cervi August 24, 2011
I was saddened to hear about the damage at the National Cathedral too, Chris. Hopefully they'll be able to reopen it soon and that all those special events will be able to continue as scheduled. #9625396Chris Budny August 25, 2011
Thank you all very much for the comments and positive thoughts and prayers.A press conference held yesterday brought some good news---the structure is deemed to be sound (although the 2 major buttress cracks are still worrisome, pending closer inspection.) Sadly, it was further confirmed that the property insurance won't cover any of this repair work, which the master mason estimated at simply "millions of dollars." The building remains closed through Saturday; Sunday's scheduled worship services are not yet certain, but the goal is to hold them.
I'm trying to look for the silver lining in this cloud; the fund-raising efforts may introduce the cathedral to a whole new generation of people who otherwise don't know about it, which is terrific. And masons, sculptors and carvers will have new, monumental work (which is a rarity, as no new gothic cathedrals are being built today.)
Thank you again for your support here, and any support you may be able to provide to the cathedral's repair efforts. #9626368

So sorry to hear of the damages, Chris. Hope that they will be able to get it back to it's deserved majesty!!! Will take a look at the website! Take care. #9626790Cathy Barrows August 25, 2011
good news...bad news...too beautiful to have been touched by this natural disaster #9626876Chris Budny August 25, 2011
Thank you both. Looks like my first day back & able to tour might not be until 9/3; should have a much clearer picture of the true extent of the damages--and specifically the impact they will have on the visiting public--ie, if certain entrances are closed, or if there's a need for reinforced, roofed scaffolding to protect from possible falling stones, etc... #9627105Lisa J. Boulden August 25, 2011
Chris, when I heard about the damage at the Cathedral, I immediately thought of you. (Amazing what an impact your images have had!)Chris Budny August 25, 2011
Thank you Lisa; the cathedral has certainly been a major element of my photography these past 6 years, and a huge part of my life for the last 16; it is heartbreaking to see the damages.I'm hoping to receive cathedral authorization to attempt to sell prints from my collection of cathedral images as a fundraising effort, donating all proceeds to the repairs. (All artwork there, inside and out, is copyrighted, and commercial sales technically need prior approval.) #9628822

The details are stronger in bw and the building looks so huge...hope the repairs can be done soon on this beautiful church #9629914Chris Budny August 26, 2011
I like this one in B/W, with the dark sky... thanks! It is pretty huge, in reality; 6th largest cathedral on earth, and the largest finished cathedral in America. Alas, the repairs will likely take a few years, and more sadly, millions of dollars---all of which must come from private gifts & donations. #9632113

Wonderful capture in B&W Chris, hope the repairs are coming along....I just sent a donation, as much as I could for now. Thanks for all the work you do at the Cathedral. #9644543Chris Budny August 31, 2011
THANK YOU SO MUCH, Phyllis, for your support!! Donations of any and every size are the key; that is what built the cathedral, and that is where the cathedral will turn again, for these multi-million-dollar repairs. No repair work has commenced yet; they are still cataloging all the damage in detail. After that, they will "stabilize" the at-risk masonry (which in many cases, will mean "unbuilding" pinnacles, gargoyles, buttress elements and turrets, etc. Then they'll examine all the recovered, cataloged stone to see what can be put back in place, to minimize the amount of new carving---but there will be plenty of new carving required, we know already. A debris net is going to be hung in the nave, to catch any falling mortar or stone chips, until the entire ceiling can be inspected and mortar repaired.
Thank you again, for your donation there! #9644566

Stunning capture and light, Chris. #9737294Alex T. Mizuno October 15, 2011
This is really magnificent! The grandeur of the cathedral is effectively portrayed in B&W. It's sad to know this beautiful church is affected by the earthquake. #9737327Chris Budny October 15, 2011
Thank you both, Leslie & Alex. The damages are quite extensive; the stabilization work is now underway; actual repair would could start sometime next year. The master mason estimates there are 10 years of repair work ahead of them now, running to "tens and tens of millions of dollars." #9737516Ellen Hodges October 24, 2011
Fantastic capture of the grandeur of this wonderful place, Chris! #9758243Chris Budny October 24, 2011
