Canary Springs, Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park. Canary was named for the yellow filamentous algae growing along the edge of the spring. Canary Spring is also known for its ultramarine-colored pool. The water flowing down the face of the terrace has created multi-colored bands of algae and cyanobacteria.

Wow. This is amazing. Was this taken in Winter, or is it the chemical/natural make-up of algae, etc that gives it the texture as well as the color? #1401769Michael Kroth August 17, 2011
Thanks, Kathy! This was taken in the beginning of July. The colors are mineral deposits, algea, and bacteria. This shot was taken about 20 minutes after sunrise. #9611361Mark S. Cox August 17, 2011
Beautiful. Excellent composition and color. #9611435Kathryn Wesserling August 18, 2011
Thanks for the extra details, Michael. This is the first time I've ever seen a photo of Canary Springs (either that or any previous ones just weren't as memorable.) #9611645Kennen White August 20, 2011
