Westover Plantation, 1730

Uploaded: July 22, 2011

Description

Westover Plantation, built by William Byrd II, survived skirmishes between the settlers and Native Americans, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. Portions of the house, most notably the library, were destroyed but later rebult.

Along the James River within only miles of each other are several notable plantations, beginning with the John Tyler Plantation(10th President of the United States) and ending with the Shirley Plantation, Virginia's first plantation. Built in 1613, it was established only 6 years after the permanent settlement of Jamestown. The Shirley Plantation will be my next photographic endeavor!
