Proud Papa

Description

This is the proud California quail papa of 8 little “quailettes”. Mama and the rest of the covey are nearby, just off the edge of the photo. These are social birds and are quite entertaining, often acting like they have had too much coffee as they dart about, scratch for food, and take dust baths. They can run exceptionally fast… their legs becoming such a blur that the quail almost appear to be floating a few inches off the ground. My favorite of the quail calls is a loud chee-KA-go, chee-KA-go. Perhaps I can teach them to say “port-OR-ford, port-OR-ford"?
