Description

The Breakers is the grandest of Newport Rhode Island's summer "cottages"
and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial preeminence in turn of the century America.
A 70 room Italian Renaissance- style palazzo inspired by the 16th century palaces of Genoa and Turin.
The Vanderbilts had seven children.
Their youngest daughter, Gladys, who married Count Laszlo Szechenyi of Hungary,
inherited the house on her mother's death in 1934.
An ardent supporter of The Preservation Society of Newport County, she opened The Breakers in 1948 to raise funds for the Society.
In 1972, the Preservation Society purchased the house from her heirs.
Today, the house is designated a National Historic Landmark.

Thanks I really appreciate your comments. This is a fabulous place to visit..but it drove me crazy not being allowed to take photos inside. There were so many EOD opportunities. Amazing wealth! #9522234

You're not kidding about the inside, Julianne! The cottages at Newport are simply astonishing creations; this one definitely trumps them all.
I like your bright b/w treatment on this... I only got to see the inside on my visit, and didn't get to walk around the exterior. #9535477

Brilliant b&w image of this elegant "summer" mansion, Julianne!
Congratulations, and best of luck next level!
(All I remember about this place was the tour guide pointing out the fireplace screens, saying, "Women wore makeup with wax in it, and the screens kept it from melting!") #10060188
