Description

The smooth, sleek lines of a shiny black classic 1960 Oldsmobile Starfire Holiday Coupe are accentuated by the effect of a wide angle lens & low key black and white treatment.

The shot was made in the CBD of my home town of Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia on a miserable early winter day during the Wintersun Nostalgia Festival 2011.

Canon EOS 40D & Sigma 10-20mm EX DC HSM Wide Angle Lens: RAW, f/6.3 @ 1/500sec, 10mm, ISO 200, Hand held.
Lightroom 2.2 & Photoshop CS3

Enjoy!

Exif: F Number: 6.3, Exposure Bias Value: 0.00, ExposureTime: 1/500 seconds, Flash: did not fire, compulsory flash mode, ISO: 200, White balance: Manual white balance, FocalLength: 10.00 mm, Model: Canon EOS 40D

THE MAKING of 'Classicmobile':

It had bucketed down with rain during the morning and my Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club mate Peter and I did not like our chances of getting some shots of the festival but we headed off to the Crema Espresso Bar, the greatest coffeehouse in town and imbibed in good coffee as we contemplated our next move.

The rain finally abated but the sky remained threatening and we could hear a rock 'n' roll band pumpin' on the Town Green so we took off into the milling crowd. Before we got to the source of the music I speared off to my right to check out all the lovely shiny things to give my rarely used wide angle lens a work out.

I started at one end of the line-up of cars and worked my way around the cul-de-sac trying all sorts of angles and effects with the lens and when I saw this big American coupe I stopped in my tracks.

As I am not quite used to the quirks of this lens it was a shock at times to find myself so close to the subject I was almost toucing it.

Enjoy!

This classic looks awesome in classic b/w. Making the chrome, lights and reflections shimmer.

Bonzer *LONNIE* & *CARLA*!!

So good to see you both milling around in the crowd checking out the classic car display.

Umpteen Aussie thanks for the inspiration and encouragement of your cobined great feedback.

Lonnie: There would have been about 100 different classics in town for the festival. You would have been drooling mate.

Carla: As soon as I saw the result of an under exposed shot I began working out how to develop that 'shimmer'. I love it!

You did an ultra-beautiful job with this car and THAT lens. I have had the same experiences (well not THIS one) with that quirky lens, and have started getting the knack. Just don't try it on a camera with a full-sized sensor...EEEk!!! #9472499
