That is a quite a bit of damage and a great photo to show it off.

I love the point of view and the sky on this one. Clarity and color are excellent. My impression is that it is just a bit dark, but wait and see if other agree because I like the mood it sets. The one thing I would suggest for sure is to clone out the bright silver post in the lower left corner. #1384222

Thanks Mike. I finally am down to my final days in NZ and am processing the images of the damage. Wasn't too concerned with getting rid of all the fences and cranes etc because these were meant to be documentary rather than artistic. However, I agree with your assessment and if I print this will definitely get rid of it.

Here a a few more from that immediate area. #9454128

Ooops. Duplicated an image. #9454131

O it's so sad to see what looks like such an old intricate building in rubble like that! I hope they are able to restore it although I know that sometimes the cost of creating such architectual artwork isn't feasable. I like your first shot the best that shows the whole building and how it is untouched in some places and completely destroyed in others. :~) #9454202

Dale Hardin June 10, 2011

Aimee, it was really sad and even more so how many people were effected by it. The entire down town area is still closed to the public and businesses for blocks around, even though undamaged, are closed because there are no customers and in some cases, no access.

This particular church is in the process of trying to salvage major parts for a restoration project. It is unsafe so will have to be razed and then rebuilt from scratch. #9454295

Oh! Lord, such a damage. You have captured beautifully the view of this massive damage. My opinion, first image is the best, it has the complete view of the structure and the lighting and tones are very effective to give a sad look. Good work Dale. #9454440

Dale Hardin June 10, 2011

Thank you Tarun. I liked your gallery a lot. You have the luxury of some lovely subjects for your portraits. #9454559

Michelle Alton June 11, 2011

Awesome, Dale. I hope you were able to meet up with Ann while in Christchurch. I also think it's just a touch dark, but it must have been a very bright day for the shutter speed you used. #9454891

I like the mood and feel of the first image, and wouldn't change anything. Except perhaps the cloning that Mike suggested. #9455201

Dale Hardin June 11, 2011

Thanks Michelle. Didn't meet Ann 'cause I didn't know her until after the trip. If I go again (a possibility) I'll certainly do so. Yes it is a little dark. Was one of only two days of bright sun while I was there and having to shoot into the sun caused some problems.

Thanks Jeff. Here's the fix. I simply cropped it out and opened the shadows a bit. #9455313

Michael Kelly level-deluxe June 11, 2011

I like the fix. Just in case I was not clear in my first comment I like this shot a lot. I think it is by far the best of the series shown though I see northing wrong with the others. #9455547

Aimee C. Eisaman June 11, 2011

The fix looks great to me! :~) #9455664

wow these are awesome dale, but sad of course that a beautiful building like this brought down by an earthquake. I like your whole series but like your original picture that you edited best. #9457096

Dale Hardin June 12, 2011

Thanks Rita. I have quite a few more that I haven't had the time to check out yet. #9457130

Beth Spencer June 12, 2011

I love the edit. It is amazing to see all the damage. It is hard to believe, but your picture helps to tell the story.. #9457272

Carla Capra Anderson June 13, 2011

Hi Dale,
I was captivated by your original image. The obvious distruction, structural signs of beauty and that sky just facinated me. I like your edit, it allows me to see more details. Very sad about the damages and effect to the local area.

Thank you Beth and Carla. Here is a story that illustrates just how tragic this event was.

The sister of my host told us about her son who works as an insurance adjuster. Just before the quake he decided to take three clients out to lunch. He had no sooner stepped out of the building onto the sidewalk, when the building collapsed killing nine of his co-workers. The trauma of the event was even more horrendous because of all the funerals he had to attend which added to the grief. #9458490
