Buteo Jamaicensis (immature)

Uploaded: June 08, 2011

Description

This immature Red Tailed Hawk fell from a nest in our back yard prematurely. My sons and I made an artifical nest out of a sawed-off milk crate, lashed it to a branch in a flowering crab tree near the nest tree (the nest he fell from is in an oak about 50 feet off the ground), and lined the crate with cedar boughs. After two days, the adults began bringing food to BOTH nests (one babe in each). A successful intervention.

As of today, it appears that my young friend has flown.
It will be interesting to see how close he lets me get after having found his wings.

Thanks Ann, Karen & JANE for your kind comments. Here he is in the artificial nest box we made for him. It really was a great experience for my kids (and me too). Best Regards, Steven #9467803
