TANOURA

Uploaded: April 21, 2011

Description

It is an Egyptian folk dance. Performed by men wearing multiple colorful skirts as they swirl in circles constantly without any break. They stop spinning at the end of the performance showing no signs of dizziness or discomfort. The Tanoura beat is religious in nature and the performers are said to enter a trance-like state during the performance, being one with God. Each color on the skirt represents one Sufi order.

Shot this during the Desert Safari activities in Dubai in April. 55mm, ISO 800, f/5.6, 0.2 sec, no flash. Photo using in-camera flash @ 1/60 sec in discussion thread.

Exif: F Number: 5.6, Exposure Bias Value: -0.67, ExposureTime: 2/10 seconds, Flash: did not fire., ISO: 800, FocalLength: 55.00 mm, Model: NIKON D40

I think this is beautifully done, Usman. I love the shape of the spinning skirt and the ring of fabric he is holding above his head. To me, the result makes me think of ringing cymbals, complete with vibration. Wonderful capture. #9361209
