Black Canyon Part 2

Description

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Colorado.
"Some are longer, some are deeper, some are narrower, and a few have walls as steep," writes geologist Wallace Hansen. "But no other canyon in North America combines the depth, narrowness, sheerness and somber countenance of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison."

Rivers are rare in this region. Where one does occur, diversity of life enlivens the landscape. Riverside at the canyon bottom here are river birch, boxelder, willow, serviceberry and cottonwood trees. These create food and aquatic shelter for insects, birds, and mammals, sheltering even fish and aquatic mammals that can live nowhere else. This national park hosts other wildlife, ranging from weasel and badger to cougar and bears.

The canyon is 48 miles long and the river drops an average of 96 feet per mile. In one two-mile stretch it drops 480 feet. At Warner Point the gorge is 2,772 feet deep. If I remember right the drive to the bottom is about 7 miles long and a 16% grade down. It's steep and gives the brakes a workout. My wife wasn't too sure about going to the bottom..LOL..

Wow, that's a steep incline - and I'd think it would put an almost worse strain on the car to come back up! This is quite a place, and one I didn't know a thing about. Beautiful scenes, Denny! #9279852
