Black Canyon Part 2

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Colorado.
"Some are longer, some are deeper, some are narrower, and a few have walls as steep," writes geologist Wallace Hansen. "But no other canyon in North America combines the depth, narrowness, sheerness and somber countenance of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison."

The canyon is 48 miles long and the river drops an average of 96 feet per mile. In one two-mile stretch it drops 480 feet. At Warner Point the gorge is 2,772 feet deep. If I remember right the drive to the bottom is about 7 miles long and a 16% grade down. It's steep and gives the brakes a workout. My wife wasn't too sure about going to the bottom..LOL..

Wow, that's a steep incline - and I'd think it would put an almost worse strain on the car to come back up! This is quite a place, and one I didn't know a thing about. Beautiful scenes, Denny! #9279852Jack Ryan March 08, 2011
