Did somebody told you the meaning of the words in the flag?
"ANTIGA MUI NOBRE SEMPRE LEAL E INVICTA CIDADE DO PORTO"
("Ancient Very Noble Always Loyal and Unvanquished City of Oporto")

In 1828 Miguel of Portugal rejected the constitution and reigned as an absolutist monarch. The city of Porto rebelled against him and suffered an eighteen months siege by the absolutist army. Because of this resistance, Porto is called "Cidade Invicta" (Unvanquished City). Eventually, King Miguel abdicated and the liberal constitution was re-established.
