Didn't our pioneers do it hard, Laura! Love this capture, I don't recall ever seeing one of these in OZ, I think our climate is too mild! #9045947

Laura E. Swan 11/17/2010 1:35:21 PM

R, r, r...Yah! COOL!

How neat, Jack! That makes sense, too. I milk cellar..Many people up here used to do the same thing in their creeks or at the edge or the creek or river. :) Thanks for adding this! :)

John I wonder how your pioneers DID keep things cool? Humm...Interesting!

Thanks you, two. :)

Root cellars are still a good place to store garden produce and some people around here still do just that. It is also a good place to cool off on a hot summer day.

Congratulations Laura for the Finalist award on your expert photography and skillfull presentation.

Hey, Pom!!
I couldn't find "Seeing You" with your message, but re-discovered this while looking. Congrats again on its making Finalist ~ well deserved!
Our family spent two summers in the '50's in a group of log cabins next to Gem Lake (somewhere between Frisco and Orange County). Mom and Dad provided meals and lodging for fishermen, including cooking their days' catch. Our underground "cooler" was stacked with perishable items ~ the best of which were the most fantastic steaks you'd ever want to devour! Shoot! Now I'm hungry... :-/
"MEM-oh-rees"..." I hear Elvis...
Ta for now! XOXOX
Mare #10879773

Laura E. Swan 10/24/2013 9:31:08 AM

Hi Mare! So good to see you here! I love your 1950's story. I felt like I was there with you as a little kid. GEM LAKE sounded wonderful and how neat that your folks did this for the fisherman!! What an experience this must have been for you and I bet you have literally tons of memories of it! Maybe even a special boy or two?? Your stories would make a good movie, or book, don't you think?

You know, those days and places with no electricity or fridge sure have a certain charm to them but I am never thrilled about the no running water thing! Carrying buckets back and forth from a river you have to trust, (breaking your back several times daily), and then having to use an outhouse all four seasons! Rain, mild, heat and snow...and darkness and night time animals, day time bugs..GOOD HEAVENS! NO! Lol...HeeHee....

If life is kind and you EVER make it up here to Calgary I hope I can go with you to Heritage Park. It's an unforgettable experience. No only is it filled with very old authentic homes that were moved there from all over the Province but they are beautiful and kept in very good shape and many are haunted! YES! HAUNTED! BOO! If your hair doesn't raise then you will for sure just have a real treat. Kiki and Leif were there with Dale and I and it was so wonderful. A real running Steam Train takes you to different areas of the park if you don't feel like walking the distance. Also a movie was made there that people have said was their favorite in the world called "Time after Time"...About a magic train that took an unhappy man from modern times back into time. A time that made him happy and that he should have lived in. I think it was Keven Costner starring? Beautiful movie but made for TV and very hard to find!!! Shanghai Noon was made there too. (Jackie Chan) and other films.

Thanks for visiting one of my Heritage Park "FAV'S" and your great comments.

P.S. I forgot and re-arranged my gallery last night. I'll send you the link for the other one!!! VERY sorry about that!!! #10880045
