Description

Potato Harvest in Eastern WA. Potatoes are grown in the ground, planted in row hills, and harvested in the fall. The plants naturally shut down and begin to set skins on the potatoes so they can be dug and transported without bruising. This image shows the dying plants in hill rows. It also shows the digger, pulled by a tractor, along with a truck which drives next to the digger for unloading and transporting the potatoes. The digger and the truck work in tandem and when one truck is full there is another waiting in line to load "on the go". In the distance there is a second set of harvest equipment.
From the fields, the potatos are transported directly to a processing plant (for example to make French Fries), or they are taken to a storage facility and kept at an even temperature and humidity for future use.
