Wrap Some Legs Around It
Uploaded: September 22, 2010
... and bite it!!
Peucetia viridans
Cupcake II standing guard astride her egg sac. Initially it is green, turning to a straw color as it ages. Note that her legs completely surround it as she has her fangs lightly embedded in the top layers of silk. If the egg sac leaves, she goes with it! She has had her last meal. Her sole mission now is protecting the egg sac from all comers, attacking viciously ANYTHING that comes within about four inches. If all goes well the little ones will emerge around Thanksgiving. Shortly thereafter she will wander off and die.
(Rotated 180 degrees for ease of viewing, she routinely does this while hanging upside down)

Cupcake? And II, no less? An enigma to be sure! This is incredible macro work, and your in-depth knowledge of the habits and life cycle of the beautiful Green Lynx is just as phenomenal! #8923109Tammy M. Anderson September 22, 2010

Oh, I'm looking forward to this but it's gonna be "tissue time" for me again - I can see it coming...The saga of a loyal, steadfast and so heart rendering, magnificently true-to-the-end "Cupcake" story always brings out those strong (but happily, usually dormant) motherly instincts of mine. (I'll keep a box of Kleenex next to the computer as this story unfolds.) Remarkable macro capture, Tex. Clarity, color and detail spot on - she's a beauty! #8923452Bonnie C. Lackey September 22, 2010
LOL, how does one follow that! Cupcake II has the most beautiful coloring. Are you learning as you go or do you already know all this? Interesting commentary to go along with the image, Jim. I think you must have enough material to write a book for children. Kids love the "violent" side of nature. #8923776Tammy Espino September 22, 2010
