Little Blue Heron, non-breeding adult.

Uploaded: August 08, 2010

Description

1/800s @ f/4.0, ISO 200, 200m.
As distinguished from the breeding adult birds, which have blue-grey plumage with purplish head and neck and dark blue legs and feet, the non-breeding adults have dark blue head and neck plumage and paler legs. The Little Blue Heron stalks its prey methodically in shallow water, often running as it does so. It eats fish, frogs crustaceans, small rodents and insects. They often mingle with Snowy Egrets.

A fine image with great exposure, Rona. It looks to me like he is thinking over this non-breeding stuff and is less than pleased. :)

Ha, ha, ha! This made me smile, Steve! Actually, I spent quite a lot of time on the internet and looking through books trying to figure out what kind of waterbird it was - Although I thought he could only be a Little Blue Heron, he did not look like the traditional pictures - and that's when I discovered that non-breeding adults were different. And in the first year, they are totally white! #8814595
