An incredible capture of this harbour island, Barbara! B&W is the perfect medium to present this image. Well done! #8810565

Is it called Cockatoo Island because it is full of Cockatoos? I see there are plenty of seagulls there. Your conversion to B&W has made for a dramatic scene here Barbara. This is terrfic. #8812392

Excellent monochromatic tones here, Barbara...and superb interest, lighting, composition and sky, too!! :o)

Your images inspired me to Google for more info. on Cockatoo Island and its past, and this is an explanation for the name of the island:

"Pre 1788: Cockatoo Island is heavily timbered with red gums and frequented by sulphur-crested cockatoos. Aboriginal people of Sydney almost certainly fished here."

Refer: http://www.cockatooisland.gov.au/about/history/timeline.html

"From at least as early as 1870 the island was referred to as ‘Biloela’, an Aboriginal word for ‘black cockatoo’."

Refer: http://www.naa.gov.au/naaresources/publications/research_guides/guides/dockyard/chapter01.htm

"Aboriginal Heritage
It was recorded by early colonists that Aboriginal people of the Sydney region called Cockatoo Island Wa-rea-mah. Aboriginal people inhabited the area for thousands of years prior to European settlement and the island may have been used as a fishing
base."
