Description

Somewhere in Crawford County, Iowa
I took this on the quilt barn tour David (my husband), Chris Budny and I took one Sunday in late July and I wish you could have seen me getting this hand held shot with my telephoto. I was on a step ladder, none too stable on the uneven ground. David was on my right holding the ladder and I was leaning into him hard to steady myself. Chris, 6'2", was on my left so I could brace my elbow on the top of his head.

Isn't that what friends (and husbands) are for? ;-) Both versions are beautiful scenes, Nikki! #8793286

Love both versions...beautiful countryside scene, Nikki! #8793412

I've always read to remove power/phone lines...they work quite nicely here ... #8793434

Nikki McDonald level-classic July 29, 2010

Thanks Monnie, Carol, and Bob.
Yes, Monnie, that's what friends and husbands are for. It was great to shoot with Chris and I learned a lot but I have to say my husband is a saint when it comes to my photography jaunts.
And I always look for a way to shoot around power lines, Bob, but I couldn't seem to find one here so I decided to work with them. Like you, I think they actually work quite nicely. #8793462

Someone should have taken a shot of that! LOL! Wonderful capture!!! #8793510

Robert R. Goodman July 29, 2010

Hi Nikki,LOL!The thing we will do to get the shot.Sure turn out to be a beautiful image.Great B&W with wonderful detail!!!! #8793577

Claudia Kuhn level-classic July 29, 2010

Well, your gymnastics worked out well. Do you always travel with a ladder? #8793585

Nikki McDonald level-classic July 29, 2010

Thank you Linda, Bobby and Claudia. Chris thought of setting his camera on a tripod and getting a timed shot but I declined -- sorry now we didn't get it. No, I don't always travel with a ladder but I am short and the corn is very high this year and this is corn country and there was room in the car so I stuck it in. It came in handy more than once and not just for me :) #8793589

Anita Hogue July 29, 2010

I love it and you should enter the color too! I wished someone would have taken a picture of you taking this picture and put in on for us to see! #8793742

Ken Smith level-classic July 29, 2010

Or you could jump real high...arms extended..snap snap! :-) Tammy told me there's another quilt barn map for Cass County...that's a little closer to us. You've inspired me to visit Sac County. Excellent work..and I'm leaning on the color version! #8793827

Jessica Jenney July 29, 2010

Both beautiful captures, Nikki! Sounds like a fun shoot! #8793890

David Phalen July 29, 2010

Both versions are great but I'm leaning toward the color version!!

Sure wish someone had gotten a shot of you taken this shot.:) #8794127

Awesome capture, Nikki! I'm glad I wasn't there to watch you do this...I would have had a tizzy fit! LOL
Beautiful and worth the trouble to get it! :-) k #8794129

Both versions are superb ,Nikki! We do some foolish things for a photo, eh?
The b/w version is exceptional in every way & love the colored one also! WTG! Great work-out too! #8794280

Rona L. Schwarz July 29, 2010

Well, it was certainly worth it! Wonderful compositions, both of them, with outstanding details. Haven't gone corn shooting this year yet, but last year I would take my husband's pick-up truck (sans husband), bring a step-stool, and get up on the roof of the cab and balance myself with my tripod! What we short people won't do for a shot! #8794382

Karen E. Baumann July 29, 2010

I think a "personality" shot of you taking this image would work quite well for a theme entry! So fun to have your description of the moment, captured in time. What a neat adventure!!!!! Nice images BTW! I really like the colored one... I am a sucker for clouds... but I like the tones in the bw version, too! #8794383

Chris Budny level-deluxe July 30, 2010

Darn! Now I really wish I'd forced the issue, and done a timer-shot of us "helping" you get this shot! It paid off; your shot (and the B/W) is terrific! Glad David found the back road to get us there.
Thank you again for hosting me on my visit to Omaha, letting me use the ladder (despite being tall) and yes, many, many thanks go to St. David (aka Mr. McDonald) for being our ever-patient, helpful driver that day! #8794982

Mitch Spence level-classic July 30, 2010

Well, I can imagine that scene quite nicely, Nikki. The idea of the step ladder on the prairies is a great one, and I should make myself tote one along. I like your use of the ever present power lines and poles here as part of the composition. #8795360

Sharon Day July 30, 2010

Great shot, Nikki!! I love the detail and B&W tones! I enjoyed the color version as well. #8796127

Nikki McDonald level-classic July 30, 2010

Thanks Anita, Ken, Jessica, David, Kitty, Patrick, Rona, Karen, Chris, Mitch and Sharon. I really appreciate your enthusiasm for this image.
I like the color version a lot myself and plan to enter it sometime in the future -- probably not before September, though. I think the lines (fields, hill contours, and telephone poles and power lines) actually show better in the black and white but it was a glorious day and the color recalls it well for me.
This is a light aluminum folding step ladder that fits nicely in the back seat and gets me a good 15" higher -- I recommend it :) #8796606

Kathryn Wesserling July 31, 2010

Your story is as good as the image, Nikki! #8796852

Debra R. Harder July 31, 2010

Well...it was definitely well worth the climb, Nikki! Love your b/w conversion here. Absolutely superb. The tones, textures, details...just perfect!! Deb #8797294

Anita Hogue August 19, 2010

I remember your b&w version. I loved it but have to say this is my favorite because of the gorgeous blues and greens! #8848403

Mitch Spence level-classic August 19, 2010

These really are both so nice it's hard choosing between them, but finally I think I have to agree with Anita and go with the color. Usually black and white emphasizes the lines best for me, but it's those terrific greens here and the touches of yellow in the fields and the corn tassels that finally decide it for me. #8848462

Lana Arcemont August 23, 2010
