Great perspective to emphasize the height of the jumper, Gary. I really like the triangular composition and the mountains in the background. #85063

Excellent shot Gary! I'm a motocrosser myself so I can really appreciate this stuff! #85134

Great action shot, Gary. What's really neat to me is seeing the dirt flying off the bike -- the little brown specks falling like snow. Nice job! #85176

Gary H. Minish level-classic May 26, 2019

Thank you all! I'm glad you enjoyed this one. It was quite challenging to handhold the camera, get the right angle for the mountain background, still get the right composition that didn't include the ramps yet positioned the truck in the right third, keep the horizon steady and level for the landscape, preset the focus and finally snap the shot at the right time within the 3 tenths of a second that the snowmachine spent in the frame! Love it when it all comes together though :-) #85867

Judy M. Sayers May 26, 2019

Awesome capture Gary!!! The title made me laugh. Judy #85928

Ouch!! I remember a similar spill very well! Ended up on my knees while I watched my snow machine fall from the air! I was more worried about my Dad's reaction than my condition!

Thanks for the memories, GAry! A deserving winner! What a capture! #102614

Monika Sapek May 26, 2019

Super action shot, Gary! Many congratulations!

Karen; This kid made about 50 good landings during this exhibition, but another kid crashed and blew out 3 discs in his spine and a girl broke her leg. This is definitely a dangerous sport! Don't try this at home (as though you would actually consider it) :-) Thank you for your comment!

Jimmy; I shot a series of these shots during the exhibition. I picked the angle carefully, to get the mountain in the photo without showing the take off and landing ramps (to make it look more impossible) then pre-composed and focused. Then it was a matter of watching the jumpers approaching out of the corner of my eye, and trying to time the shutter to stop them during the 1/2 a second that they were within the frame! After a dozen jumps I was hitting them pretty regularly. I appreciate your comment!

Dolores; I'm glad I brought up old memories, but I'm sorry they were painful ones :-) In this particular case there was no spill though. The landing was perfect and he got high points for his mid air tricks. Thank you for your comment!

Monika; Thank you very much! I shot a number of these with different riders and needless to say they are in high demand by the jumpers plus their families & friends! #103126

Kathleen Clemons May 26, 2019

Way to go, Gary! Congrats on winning second with this! :) #103799

I seem to be missing a lot of great photos. If they don't jump out in a thumbnail I don't look at them. This is simply marvolous! Talk about an action shot! Those action shots are NOT easy to catch! Great GREAT job! Just looking at this photo scares the kajeebies out of me so I will not be trying this at home! LOL Congrats on the win. :o) #103987

Why thank you, Patricia! That's very sweet of you :-)

I'm curious how your vacation went! I saw a comment where you said you caught a cold....that sounds like the weather was probably cold and wet. It's been unseasonally lousy here at Valdez, so it wouldn't surprise me. I sure hope you managed to get some decent photos just the same. #107467

WONDERFUL capture, Gary - and a GREAT title for your image, too! I just saw it featured, and HAD to comment! Are these people crazy - or what?! I just know that I'm glad it's not me up there - lol!! ;) Anyway, we'll be looking forward to seeing more of these action shots from you soon! All the best, Gary! :) #946579

Gary H. Minish level-classic November 30, 2004

Thanks, Carolyn! Actually I think these guys are a little beyond crazy...more into the insane category. This last year a couple of them have developed and mastered the back flip. Snowmachine and rider do a backward 360° loop in the air as they travel forward and still somehow manage to land on the down ramp!! And what about all those unsuccessful practice attempts you might ask? #947395

Carolyn J. Connolly November 30, 2004

Indeed - what about all those unsuccessful practice attempts?!!! ;) Also, fancy trying that back flip...they're definitely insane!!! ;) Thanks for the feedback, Gary! :) #947550

Gary H. Minish level-classic November 30, 2004

Since you asked....the first attempts were made with a snow ramp and 'landings' into fresh snow. Once they proved it could be done they perfected the procedure by jumping into fairly deep water. A lot of work recovering the machine after each jump but both the machine and rider tended to last longer with fewer injuries. I didn't see the first attempts made on a set of ramps but it must have been an adrenalin rush for the that rider! #947591

Carolyn J. Connolly November 30, 2004

Thanks for that explanation of the practice techniques, Gary!! ;) In my humble opinion they are all adrenalin-junkies - but hey, "horses for courses', huh?!! ;) I showed this image to Phil, and he thought it a WONDERFUL capture too, Gary! Keep up the excellent work, and have a great day, won't you?! :) #947645
