Description

Haviland High School....
The first graduating class was in 1916
The last graduating class...2010.
After 94 years, this high school, my son's high school, my high school, my husbands high school, our parents high school, and our ancestors high school.. closed its doors yesterday, Friday, May 21st 2010. On May 15th, The 13 students of the senior class graduated and walked through the halls and down the front sidewalk for the last time. The remaining 52 students, said their goodbyes, cleaned their lockers out and made the same final steps their senior classmates had already made. Although all will have memories of being a Haviland Dragon, there is sadness that comes along with the closing of the doors in which students spent 4 years of their lives. It will fade in time as the seniors move on to college and the remaining students will make new friends and memories when the new school year begins in August....

I'm to assume that they will attend the brand new high school in Greensburg, just 10 miles away. Opening its doors for the first time following the EF5 tornado that flattened the old school in May of 2007. Our mascot will no longer be The Dragons, it will be The Mavericks. We won't sport the Navy Blue and Gold school colors any longer as they will change to Orange and White. Our kids will have to look upon this change as an end, of course, but also as a new beginning. It will be a new beginning for Greensburg as well…New School…New students from across the county. The changing of their mascot too, no longer being Greensburg Rangers with the colors of royal blue and red. My son Denton will finish school next year as a senior at Kiowa County High School, and as a Maverick, but the memories of being a Haviland Dragon will always be in his heart.... #1271173

Melodie, I'm so sad to hear this is closing... It is a beautiful school. I'm from Oklahoma and understand about tornadoes and how they can wreck people's lives in seconds... I remember this F5 tornado! I wish the town of Greensburg, KS the best... #8628353

I got lucky in that my class was the last before a couple of rural districts consolidated and the name changed. A handful of years ago, the old school (grades K through 12 in one building) was demolished to make way for a new one, in a real sense burying all our wonderful memories. I empathize! Wonderful capture, Jeana! #8628504

As a retired high school teacher, I can fully understand how you must feel. So many schools are being replaced and so many memories are being shared...not just in your area, but all over the country. Here in Ohio, my elementary school is long gone, my junior high school is gone, and my high school...from which I graduated and then returned to teach for more than thirty years, is about to go. The times..they are a'changin'! Excellent photo...perhaps to share with some of the alums??? #8628534

In a way it is very sad, but also starting a new adventure is very exciting too. Wonderful image of history that includes your entire family. #8630991
