Description


My favorite accessible spot on the intermittently flowing Doeskin Branch. The solitude is enhanced by the relatively quiet surroundings and soft sound of water burbling over the rocks as it makes its way to Cow Creek. Recently I reclined on the large boulder (center) and fell asleep for a short 10-15 minute snooze.

Here on Doeskin Ranch, access to water adds lushness not just to the growth of frostweed, a fall-blooming wildflower that attracts hundreds of Monarch butterflies during their migration south to Mexico, but also to this American Sycamore (left). Like the settlers in the 1840s and '50s who forged their way west from eastern Texas, southern states, and Europe, you will find eastern plants (American Sycamore) and wildlife occupying habitat with western species (Ashe Juniper). Just as more kinds of wildlife and plants dwell in a zone between creek and grassland, there is more diversity where one geographic region merges with another one. The Great Plains and Gulf Coast bioregions merge in this area. Life at nature's intersections tends to be rich and unusual. Throw in the unusual limestone geology of the Edwards Plateau and it's not surprising to find plants and animals adapted to live here and nowhere else.

this is the kind of southern Va stream I would walk for miles as a kid collecting turtles frogs snakes crawfish and everything my friends and I could carry.
