Peter - I love all the wonderful colors in this image and the POV. Did you really photograph this through the window or is this something that you put in post-processing? I was actually thinking about doing something like this to some of my harbor picturesd. It looks like this is "for real" though!! #1262797

Hi Debbie. Many thanks. This came about from my love of beer! We were having a pint or two in the Sharks Fin Inn on the quayside at Mevagissey when I was back in Cornwall last summer. It was the colors that made me put down my glass and make a few images from where we sat inside the pub. I liked the frame too so didn't do any cropping and about the only PP work I did was to take some glare off the white masts and foredeck of the first boat.
God willing, and no more volcano eruptions I should be back there in July so will have lots more opportunities for shots like this. BP isn't keen on frames added to images but let's see what they make of a window frame! #8571025

This is really cool Peter. Like Debbie said, the colors and POV are fantastic.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for your trip, though for selfish reasons: I can't wait to see the batch of images that you bring home with you. #8571069

I love the unique POV here as well...surprised you were able to get in focus and level...you must've taken on your first pint.. #8571718

I will join the with the others - wonderful color and nicely done through a window. I have trouble getting anywhere near this straight with no alcohol so very fine job indeed. #8571993

Teresa H. Hunt April 26, 2010

Very nice Peter. I love all the colors.

I was thinking you could take a smidge off the top. The frame of the window is so close to the top that whats above it really doesn't add anything. But since no one has mentioned it . . . it's probably just me. :) #8572119

I like this a lot Peter. The scene is captivating and the view through the window only adds to the mood of the shot.

I agree with Teresa that a slight crop would enhance the image. Would suggest clipping the top down to the top muntin. #8572221

Love the colors....and the fact that you left some of the window frame....it should go over well with the judges I'd think....a natural frame instead of a PSed one. I must agree a crop off the top would enhance this image. :~) Always love how you see photo opps. anywhere you go. I see them too, but usually not in large real life scale. Guess I got a macro mind....I'll have to work on that. #8572929

Thank you friends, I am happy to be able to share small parts of my homeland with you.
When I made this image in a busy pub I had little chance to try for the 'perfect' shot so settled for what would just remind me of where I was at the time and what was running through my mind.(then I returned to the serious business of supping on my pint and putting the world to rights in conversation with complete strangers.)
The portion of window above that top muntin (are we not impressed with brother Dale's knowledge of window anatomy!)was no accident. I would have liked to have included more of it but for that low POV it would have meant I had to kneel on the floor, nearly under the table; and it takes more than the first pint to put me there! What I was trying to achieve was to include some more sky to suggest that this window was allowing me to not only see these commercial fishing boats, waiting for the tide but out there, beyond the harbour wall was the open sky and ocean. So maybe only I can 'see' this, but letting your own imaginations free, maybe you might join me?

The following is a snippet of poetry I recall although I cannot attribute it as I no longer remember who wrote this.

"Through a window I watch.
Windows are for watching.
Square pieces of life
Ever changing."

Thanks to my good friend Google:

Windows
by Donovan Holtz

Across the headlands
The forest masses
Under gray skies
And mist
Into a solid wall
Of muted gray
Through which cars
Glide skirting noiselessly
The rocky edge.
Through a window
I watch, windows are
For watching -
Square pieces of life
Ever changing. #8573334

I can't believe you didn't go for another pint or three to get that under the table shot!! Where have your artistic values flown to? :o) #8573622

Peter W. Marks April 27, 2010

Thank you Jeff, I should have thought of that.

And Dale, old friend, as a matter of fact I did get under it, but it was half way through the 4th pint and I am not sure I was holding the camera the right way up :0)

I love window shots, there is just a good feeling about them. I am amazed at how clean the glass is. Love the colors.

The PUI shot is great for not knowing if you you holding the camera the right way up. #8575954

LOL Aimee! And thank you all. I entered this image last year and it didn't even get an EP so I think you might guess I don't set too much store by the judges opinions. And that is not because I think this is a great image but I would have thought it was sufficiently different to be at least considered interesting. #8576980

Dale Hardin April 28, 2010

It's more than interesting Peter. It made want to go there! #8577021

LOL! Loved reading through this thread! What a wonderful scene you captured here Pete. Kind of gives me a visual for all of my parents' stories of their pub adventures while living in the UK for several years. Can't understand why it didn't get an EP though. #8580257
