About Ellen Devenny
Photography has become my favorite hobby. I especially enjoy macro photography, shooting waterfalls, and candid shots of children at play. Being an Early Childhood Teacher, I find plenty of opportunities for the later.
Like most people I've always enjoyed taking pictures, but over the last five years, I have become a lot more serious about the images that I am taking. After upgrading from a point and shoot camera to a DSLR, I found there was so much to learn. I didn't want to let the camera do all the work anymore and decided it was time to learn how to use those manual settings. I began reading everything I could get my hands on that had to do with photography. My favorite magazines are Outdoor Photographer and Popular Photography. But the one thing I found that helped me the most was being a part of a photography website. The first one I joined was BetterPhoto.com, a contest site which allowed you to enter one photo per day in about 6 different categories. I learned allot about composition by studying the works of others. Then I joined BytePhoto.com, which is a much smaller site where you could submit 2 photos per week. There the photographers would critique each other's work. There is still so much to learn!
I've been fortunate enough to have freelance photos published in Our State magazine over the past two and a half years. It's always exciting to see your work in print!
