McConnell's Mill
shutter priority 1/15; f20.0; exp bias +1.33; ISO100; preset white balance; focal length 62mm
I chose this focal length for several reasons. First, it was an overcast day and I wanted to keep the sky out of the photo. Second, on the far bank, the trees ended and there was a field of white snow and ice that I wanted to keep out of the photo as well while keeping part of the old mill in the photo. A focal length smaller than this would have included the sky and the field of white that I was trying to keep out of the photo. A focal length larger than this would not have allowed me to get the upstream shot as well as the old mill.
I chose to make this a black/white photo once I got home and previewed it in iPhoto. The colors were almost black and white anyway due to the overcast conditions as well as the time of year so I went black and white to remove any unwanted shades that I felt detracted from the scene. I increased the sharpness but did very little to the contrast.
