Comes to us all.
This is a lytch gate at St Materiana's Church
at Tintagel, Cornwall. The lytch stone in the center of the gateway is where the funeral party would rest the corpse ("lytch" in medieval English)while they waited for the priest to meet them to conduct the first part of the committal service for the departed.
The church was built between 1080 and 1150
and sits high on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and is just a half mile from Tintagel castle where legend has it that King Arthur held court with his Knights of the Round Table.
