Magic Mountain - Photograph at BetterPhoto.com

Magic Mountain The place you see here is among my favorite spots on Earth. At least twenty times, over four or five trips, over three years I have sat here and watched the sun rise on Mount Rainier. The river below leads from the Emmons glacier away from the massive peak. A few late wildflowers still blooming compliment the foreground. One night after full, the moon was setting in the West above the mountain as the first light struck the peak. I had known for some time now that this spot was very special. With the right atmosphere and conditions the shot could be spectauclar. Rarely have I seen a better natural compostion of features in a landscape. One this magic morning, everything finally came together. Alpenglow illuminated the East face and clouds streaking over the peak for all of five minutes before disappearing. It was one of the most astonishing and brief displays of light I've ever seen. I made many images, most using two grad filters to control a difficult exposure. Uploaded on 8/14/2006 11:14:15 AM
