Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery
Looking more like a fortress than a monastery, Kirillo-Belozersky, the great foundation of St. Kirill sits on the shores of Severskoye Lake was founded in 1397 by two monks. It originally was a single cave and later added wooden chapel. In 1494 was replaced by current stone structure that at the time was the largest church in medieval Russia. In 1764 Catherine the great used it as a prison. In 1924 atheist Bolshevick government closed the monastery down executed the monks and turned it into a museum.
