Flight 93 Memorial
Words etched on a glass overlook say, "A common field one day. A field of honor forever." This Memorial is the nation's memorial to the passengers and crew of Flight 93, the fourth plane hijacked September 11, 2001. All 33 passengers, seven crew members, and four hijackers were killed.
The design of this building traces the flight path of the plane, while the cement walls represent the airplane's wings. The dark panels along the sides portray the coal mining fields where the plane went down in Shanksville -- a small farm town near Pittsburgh. If you look closely at the walkway, you'll see small angular lines and cuts. They represent branches of hundreds of Hemlock trees that were charred at the crash site.
A beautiful, but solemn place.
