Avarian Symphony
The Batiquitos Lagoon is a coastal wetland and home to many plants, birds, and fish. The area is run by the California Department of Fish and Game as a nature reserve. The 610-acre lagoon is located 28 miles north of San Diego, north of Leucadia, at the southern edge of Carlsbad, and next to South Carlsbad State Beach.
The California Least Tern is a subspecies of Least Tern that breeds primarily in bays of the Pacific Ocean within a very limited range of Southern California. The California Least Tern arrives at its breeding grounds in April. Courtship typically takes place removed from the nesting colony site, usually on an exposed tidal flat or beach. These birds were very vocal and active yesterday. In the background, several California Brown Pelicans and seagulls, look on.
