Nancy Rubins monumental sculpture made from used airplane parts was installed on the Sculpture Plaza at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in 2002. With an expanse of 54 feet, it is among the largest Rubins has ever made, and one of the most carefully and delicately engineered. A high-tech modular armature allows the sculpture to be both freestanding and have a narrow base which then mushrooms out into a wide canopy-like expanse. Rubins carefully added hundreds of aluminum and titanium pieces from the aerospace industry. For the last 25 years Rubins has developed her signature style by creating architecturally inspired works out of airplanes, fiberglass boats, household appliances, and other found objects. Rubins pushes earlier sculptural concerns into the present, addressing issues of consumption, waste, and post-industrial urbanism in her work.
