Grounded
40-some years ago, this US Navy plane had to make an emergency crash landing in southern Iceland, apparently during a white-out, low on fuel.
The plane was eventually stripped of engines and all interior fittings. The tail was cut off and moved to another part of Iceland
(where a farmer had a different fuselage on his property, missing a tail; he was able to attach this plane's tail, completing his plane.)
Later, this fuselage was dragged further into the black sand beach, to make sure the surf wouldn't reach it. It has since been used for target
practice (peppered with bullet holes all over). It was by far the most unusual, unexpected sight of our trip!
It was a bad weather day (the worst of our 10 days); several NIK filters applied to further the moodiness of the scene.
