Flower Alert
Hibiscus plants fall into two categories: tropical and hardy. Tropical plants are probably the most popular and well known of the two varieties; however, hardy hibiscus have larger flowers and are more cold hardy, vigorous and last longer than the tropical hibiscus.
Hardy hibiscus colors (flowers last one day) range from white to red, yellow and many shades of pink. This hibiscus species blooms from late spring through fall, and the fact that it can survive a hard freeze is its main distinguishing characteristic from tropical hibiscus.
Hibiscus tea is popular in Caribbean cocktails. The tea is used to enhance non-alcoholic fruit drinks and the flower can be used in salads, as an edible garnish and in candies.
Hibiscus Breckenridge (a yellow flower) is the state flower of Hawaii.
