What's Up?
Finalist
This meerkat was on sentry duty at the Henry Doorly Zoo. Meerkats are very social and live in colonies, performing many duties for one another. While others are foraging or playing, one or more meerkats stand sentry to warn them of approaching dangers. When a predator is spotted, the sentry gives a warning bark and the others will run and hide. The sentry meerkat is the first to reappear. He barks to keep the others underground until there is no threat; then he stops signaling and the others feel safe to emerge.
